Sci-fi anime has shaped global pop culture since Osamu Tezuka’s Astro Boy first hit TV screens. Now IGN has ranked the 10 best sci-fi anime series ever made, and the list hits hard.
A panel of IGN experts focused strictly on pure sci-fi, meaning space, robots, aliens, and futuristic worlds. That ruled out Dragon Ball despite its sci-fi elements.
Honorable mentions went to FLCL, Psycho-Pass, and Serial Experiments Lain before the top 10 kicked off.
Code Geass made the cut for blending mech battles, political intrigue, and teen drama into one addictive package. Cowboy Bebop earned its spot as the ultimate gateway anime, with Shinichiro Watanabe’s jazz-soaked sci-fi western still standing as a masterpiece of cel animation. Cyberpunk Edgerunners, the Studio Trigger spinoff built inside the Cyberpunk 2077 universe, also secured a place on the list.
