Canadian Musician Mario Lapointe Owns Dumbarton FC Women and It’s Working

Mario Lapointe did not expect to become a Scottish football club owner, but here we are. The Canadian songwriter and entrepreneur took over Dumbarton FC Women roughly a year ago, and the story behind his decision is genuinely wild.

Lapointe says people constantly ask how a Canadian musician ended up running a lower league Scottish club. His answer points to signs he could not ignore. Back in 1992, he wrote a song with a lyric about sitting on a rock. Dumbarton’s home ground is literally called The Rock. He also wrote heavily about rivers and ships, and the club sits right on the water.

He describes the players as a megaphone for the team, meaning they carry the brand and the message further than any marketing budget could.

Fate, lyrics, and a Scottish football club nobody predicted. Lapointe is proving that the strangest origin stories sometimes make the best ones.
