Marshall Faulk Calls Out Racial Bias in NFL and College Coaching Jobs

Marshall Faulk is not holding back. The Hall of Fame running back and new Southern University head coach is speaking openly about the racial gap in college football and NFL coaching, and his words hit hard.

The numbers back him up. Only 13 major college programs currently have Black head coaches, down from 17 out of 120 back in 2011. Faulk pointed out that Black players face unique barriers when transitioning from player to coach, barriers that white former players simply do not face at the same rate.

He noted that figures like Matt Ryan landed front office roles with the Atlanta Falcons, Josh McCown got considered for a head coaching job in Houston, and JJ Redick got the Los Angeles Lakers job without prior coaching experience.

Faulk’s question was simple: why do Black players have to clear a higher bar?

The coaching demographics still do not reflect the player demographics, and that gap is not closing fast enough.
