Nolan Smith Jr. Arrested for Speeding and the NFL Has to Answer for It

Eagles linebacker Nolan Smith Jr. was allegedly driving 135 mph in a 70 mph zone when he was arrested for speeding and reckless driving in Twiggs County, Georgia. The 2023 first-round pick posted bond shortly after the arrest and no court date has been set yet.

Early social media reports put the speed at 137 mph, but the Twiggs County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the lower figure Wednesday, per ESPN’s Tim McManus.

No accident occurred, but that almost makes it worse. The NFL has a pattern here. Chiefs receiver Rashee Rice got a six-game suspension after a street racing crash injured multiple people. The punishment came because people got hurt, not because of the behavior itself.

That logic is backwards. Every time an NFL player pushes a car past 130 mph on a public road, the only thing standing between a headline and a tragedy is pure luck.
