Chelsea Handler is not letting this one go quietly.
More than a week after Netflix’s Roast of Kevin Hart wrapped, Handler is still in the ring , and she’s specifically got Shane Gillis and Tony Hinchcliffe in her crosshairs. The former late-night host made it clear she was not okay with what went down on that dais, calling both comics bigots and labeling their jokes racist. No hedging, no diplomatic soft-landing. Just straight to it.
Here’s the thing about roasts: the whole premise is that nothing is off-limits, and everyone in the room has theoretically signed up for the chaos. But Handler’s point seems to be that there’s a difference between a joke that roasts someone and a joke that just uses someone as cover to say something you actually believe. It’s a line that gets debated every single time one of these events happens, and somehow we never actually resolve it.
What makes this interesting is the timing. Handler wasn’t tweeting from her couch in real-time , she sat with it for over a week before going public. That’s not a knee-jerk reaction. That’s someone who thought about it, decided the silence felt wrong, and spoke anyway. Whether you agree with her read on the jokes or not, that’s a deliberate choice.
Gillis and Hinchcliffe are both comics who have spent significant portions of their careers testing exactly where those lines are , and occasionally blowing past them entirely. Hinchcliffe in particular has faced controversy before for jokes that critics said went beyond edgy into something uglier. Handler clearly thinks this Netflix roast was more of the same.
Netflix has been leaning hard into the live event space, and the Hart roast was a big swing for them. Getting Handler’s name attached to post-show controversy probably wasn’t part of the rollout plan.
The roast is over. The conversation, apparently, is not.
