Maika Monroe just shut down Cannes with one of the festival’s most intense reactions of the year. Her new gothic horror film Victorian Psycho, directed by Zachary Wigon, earned a full five-minute standing ovation after its screening, and the crowd was clearly shaken in the best way possible.
The film follows Monroe as a possessed woman in a period horror setting that goes to genuinely dark places. Think murdered babies, axes buried in skulls, and Monroe delivering what early buzz is calling a monstrous, career-defining performance. This is not quiet gothic atmosphere. This is full-throttle nightmare fuel dressed in Victorian costume.
Cannes 2025 had already delivered European arthouse and wild CGI creature features like Hope, but Victorian Psycho hit different. The thriller is now one of the most talked-about films out of the festival, with horror fans and awards watchers both paying close attention.
