Meta just let thousands of employees go, and the company is not hiding why. In an internal email obtained by Business Insider, management told affected staff the cuts were part of an effort to run leaner and free up money for bigger investments elsewhere, meaning AI.
Rumors of a major Meta layoff wave started circulating back in March, when reports suggested the company could slash up to 20 percent of its total workforce. A more recent memo from May confirmed the reductions are now moving forward.
Meta has been pouring billions into artificial intelligence, from AI assistants to infrastructure and model development. CEO Mark Zuckerberg has made AI the company’s top priority, and it appears regular employees are bearing the cost of that bet.
This is what it looks like when a tech giant decides AI is worth more than headcount.
