Mortal Kombat II is making moves at the box office. Nearly two weeks into its theatrical run, the Karl Urban action sequel has officially outgrossed the 2021 original, which launched day-and-date on HBO Max and never stood a real chance at big theatrical numbers.
The sequel still has not hit its estimated break-even point, which keeps the financial picture complicated. Competition is heating up fast too, with The Mandalorian and Grogu arriving this week to pull audiences away.
Reviews have been lukewarm, but fans are showing up anyway. That said, Mortal Kombat II is not operating at the same level as Godzilla x Kong or Dune Part Two, both of which also outgrossed their HBO Max predecessors but pulled in significantly bigger numbers overall.
Beating the original is a win, but clearing a profit line before Star Wars takes over the conversation is the real fight.
